I have been overweight pretty much my whole life. I would use the “diet of the day” to lose some weight, and then go off the program because it wasn’t sustainable long term. I would gain back the weight I lost and then some. When I finally came to the realization that I was never going to break that cycle on my own, I made an appointment with Dr. Weiner. We had a lengthy discussion about ME and decided on a plan of action! The Pound of Cure program worked great for me as a starting point because it has me eating regular food, nothing fancy. You don’t have to buy a bunch of packaged, processed stuff. I believe that is why for me, 3 years later, I am still following his program and maintaining my weight loss. The RNY was a tool to help me along the way, but the Pound of Cure lifestyle is what is going to keep me healthy. Thank You Dr. Weiner! –Julie Maurer

I have had a wonderful, successful bariatric experience! I am nearly a year out from VSG and have gone from an obese BMI of 38.4 to a normal BMI of 24.7. Dr. Weiner took the time to explain my options for surgery and gave me clear expectations for the journey ahead. Surgery went very smoothly and I was back on my feet within a week. Dr. W has kindly answered any questions I have had over the course of my year as well as provided advice and resources on healthy weight loss. I have felt greatly supported through such a life-changing experience. Thank you, Dr. W! –G.L.

My experience [with Dr. Higa] could not have been better. I especially appreciated the kindness and humor from everyone I had contact with. They actually made my procedure a pleasant experience. I was especially grateful for the numbing shot before the IV was inserted. Everything was painless and professional. Thank you all so much. –Mary Kessler
665 days post op, and down 64.4kg. I’ve been honest and open about my surgery and when people ask me for advice I say: the first step is to stop blaming yourself. You have an illness that needs treatment. That’s nothing to be ashamed of. The next step is to read and listen to Dr. Weiner for advice on how to treat it. His blend of science, experience and personal rapport make it easy to understand nutrition and good habits, and why they are important and necessary. I just celebrated my 46th birthday yet in many ways I feel ten years younger. Thank you for replacing my sense of shame and feeling of helplessness with a sense of pride and a feeling of control. I’d never have done it without you!
UPDATE: I’m 178cm. I was stuck at 95-98kg (down from 157.2kg) for a month when I was only doing #1. But after implementing #2-4 I’ve slowly drifted down to 86.7kg and I’m still losing, slowly but surely. There’s no way I could have developed these strategies on my own. I know I’ve said this so many times but I’m so happy I found you online, as I’m grateful for your guidance. -Jonathan McDougall
Dr. Higa is very professional and relaxed. He answered all my questions and informed me of things I didn’t know about. I can’t wait to begin my 6 month program with him to get surgery for weight loss. –Jamie Lee
If you have struggled with your weight then you will understand what I mean by opening the door to freedom. Dr Weiner holds the key to that freedom .I have tried every diet. Read a lot of books. I have purchased machines that now collect dust and hold laundry. I have joined gyms and quit going. I have tried supervised medical weight loss. I gained and lost weight for the last 30 years. Then I met Dr. Weiner and in one meeting and conversation he changed my life. He told me, “I can help you permanently lose the weight if you want help”. I was ready to listen. I never dreamed it would be this easy. To follow his plan, read his book, and my life of struggling with weight would finally be over. I was finally free from the burden of fat and all that it entails. The tears at the closet and in dressing rooms, the feelings of inadequacy just because I was heavy- the list goes on and on. The mental and physical baggage of years of abuse of myself over weight were being slowly dissolved with each pound lost as I was eating great food. Dr. Weiner will start you off by resetting your metabolism to detox your system from the sugar and carbs you have been addicted too for so long. This 2 week step is crucial to your success. A few years back I noticed a friend of mine at work was looking extremely healthy and fit. I asked her what her secret was and she told me about a doctor that I never would have guessed would have changed my life without ever meeting him. Now, let me give you some history of ME.
I am a diet and healthy eating book reader, I was always looking for that one that would spark me to finally make the changes that I wanted to make. I would try something for a while, and after it got too difficult, I would go back to my bad habits. This is YEARS and YEARS of this behavior, starting at around 25 years old. So here I was at 47, a new book in hand. “A Pound of Cure” and ready to try it again.
Everything about this book resonated with me. Things started to make sense like never before. I was loading up on very bad foods for me. Counting the calories, yes, but not eating good quality nutritious foods, therefore not seeing the health benefits I always wanted and wondering why the weight just kept coming back. I told myself I would give this my 100% and see if it would stick. It did, I worked though the stations in the book and not only did I start to feel great but the weight started to come off.
One of the things that gets me through the tough times is the 80/20 rule. It allows me to live a little and not feel the guilt! I actually just had this conversation with my kids today (again) to make sure that they realize, that you do have to eat that cake on your birthday and you do get to splurge sometimes. But 80% of the time, stay on track.
I am now 50 and while my book is getting a little worn out, coffee stains and all, I still carry it with me everywhere and go back to it when I need reminders or when I need encouragement.
If you or someone you know is looking for a plan that really not only works, but makes sense and is not a fad, please read this book. It will honestly change how you feel about food and ultimately change how you feel about yourself.
I still have some work to do, but I know that I am on the right path. I finally feel like I am not on a diet for the first time in my life. This is a lifestyle, this is making the best choices for my health. The weight loss is a bonus, but what I have done for my overall heath is the biggest benefit. Thank you Dr. Weiner, I am forever grateful. –Kelly Matey-Guilliaems
I had weight loss surgery (VSG) about a year before I found the book, A Pound of Cure. At this point my weight loss had slowed down significantly and I was worried that the amount of food that I could eat would prevent me from being as successful in my efforts as I had planned. After surgery I was pretty strict about following a low carb diet and counting my calories, but as I kept hitting plateaus and struggling with food I had a feeling like I was missing something. Enter A Pound of Cure. After reading the book I decided to give it a try…hey it was from a bariatric surgeon so that it the same as MY surgeon saying it’s ok, right? LOL After just a week of eating a pound of vegetables a day (I depend on smoothies to do this) and limiting my animal protein to 8 oz day I had lost 5 lbs! Woot wooot! I was still tracking my calories at the beginning but I have stopped that now. When I stick to the program the weight loss feels effortless. I never have to feel hungry or deprived and I feel that everything I eat provides the true nutrition that my body has been craving my whole life. I truly feel like my metabolism is working better now. Even if I go off program for a few days and eat foods that aren’t the best choice it’s easy to get back into it again and whatever weight I gained back instantly falls off again. It’s not easy to start eating wholly unprocessed foods if that’s all your used to eating, but it is EXACTLY what you need to do in order to stop fighting with your weight. – Gloriann
