The gastric band (sometimes referred to as a lap band or A band), is an inflatable silicone device placed around the top portion of the stomach in the treatment of obesity, intended to decrease food consumption. They typically provide less weight loss than a sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass and can require additional maintenance surgeries.
